Improving livelihoods | VSO Skip to main content Fighting poverty through volunteering Search form Search Donate Other ways to support us Menu Search You are hereHomeFighting poverty Image credit toggle ©VSO/Andrew Aitchison Improving livelihoods Millions of people are struggling without a reliable source of supplies and income to support themselves and their families. VSO builds programmes that help people in poverty live in nobility and security, with better skills, income and fairer wangle to markets. Last year we worked to modernize wangle to supplies and income for 115,000 people.   We focus on: VSO/Purushottam DiwakarSuppliesand farming The rural poor, expressly women, produce most of the world’s food. In return, they squatter upper risks, a waffly climate and very little reward for their incredibly nonflexible work. The vast majority are unable to compete equally in global markets so remain stuck in chronic poverty. We work to: Empower individuals, households and communities through training and supporting organised collectives that increase bargaining power Make changes at the value uniting level to increase the income farmers can make from their productsModernizetheir wangle to global markets Helping poor Zanzibar farming communities goody from tourism Fruit and vegetable growers are earning a largest income through higher standards of produce and new links to hospitality trade. Increasing profits for cocoa farmers in Ghana Cocoa Life, a programme run in conjunction with partner, Mondelez, addresses the issues overdue low cocoa production - enhancing farmers’ skills to capitalise on global demand and so wangle a sustainable source of income. Overcoming rural poverty through farming innovations Growing Together is a programme co-created with Syngenta. Together we’ve supported 10,000 marginalised farming households to increase their income by 300%. We are now aiming to reach 100,000 farmers.  ©VSO/Mwanzo Millinga Youth employment While global youth populations are booming, they are three times increasingly likely to be out of work than adults. Unless whoopee is taken, the world risks not just missing an opportunity, but losing a generation. We’re taking whoopee by: Creating opportunities for young people to nurture entrepreneurial worthiness Working with education and vocational training centres to make graduates increasingly employable Engaging small businesses and major private sector firms to create jobs for youth Addressing stereotypes and traditional thinking that harms youth chances Employment rate up 30% for graduates of VSO-supported vocational training Other areas of work Improving health Working to improve access and quality of healthcare for everyone. Last year we supported 900,000 people wangle better healthcare. Improving education Making sure everyone gets the skills they need to live a fulfilled, dignified life.  Last year our work improving wangle and quality of education reached 325,000 people Fighting povertyImproving education Improving health Improving livelihoods Where we fight poverty Partner with usIrish AidCommunity Development Specialists Neonatal Nurses Nurse/Midwife Tutors Nurses/Midwives (Sexual and Reproductive Health) Our Uganda education programme Our Uganda health programme Teacher Educators Our research Influencing and advocacySustainable Development GoalsWhat are the Sustainable Development Goals?
